Ah Week 17… the black sheep of the Fantasy Football season. The ranks can get a little thin Week 17 with playoff teams resting starters so lets take a quick look at who might not play, and who might fill their shoes. Remember, just because someone like Todd Gurley may not play, does not mean they will be inactive, so do not draft these guys expecting to be able to Swap.
Quarterbacks: Alex Smith, Jared Goff, Blake Bortles, and Nick Foles.
They might not be the MOST highly coveted guys, but be weary of drafting these 4, as their playoff spots are already locked in. There are still many great alternative options out there, like budding star Jimmy Garoppolo, or maybe even roll the dice on the Pat Mahomes debut.
Running Backs: Todd Gurley, Kareem Hunt, Leonard Fournette, and Jay Ajayi.
The only thing slowing down these 4 is their coach. These studs are likely to not play, just like their respective quarterbacks. I know it could be tempting to “steal” one of these guys late, but draft at your own risk, as it would be a surprise if these guys see the field.
With a litany of injuries throughout the league at RB it might be time to draft some guys you haven’t before. Melvin, Demarco, Rex, Mixon and Aaron Jones, could all be sidelined with injury, making the RB spot even thinner this week. Could this be the week the Derrick Henry era finally begins?
WR/TE: The Rams (Woods, Kupp, Watkins) The Jags (Keelan Cole, Dede Westbrook) The Eagles (Alshon, Agholor, Ertz) and The Chiefs (Tyreek Hill, Kelce)
Seeing a pattern here? With these teams already having their playoff position etched in stone, there is little reason for these guys to play. Look to find some guys either playing for playoff position, pride, or a new contract. Perhaps Goodwin will continue to emerge as the next great fantasy WR, or Martavis will continue on his path to redemption.
Now remember, no one knows for sure, this is just a guide of who might sit. If you want to be extra safe, maybe stay away from these guys, but if Gurley sitting there in Round 5 is too tempting, we wouldn’t blame you.
