Hey mates, Easty here, back for another week of DRAFT Golf picks and sleepers, along with a recap of last weekend’s golf tournament.
Sentry Tournament of Champions Recap
This past weekend of golf saw Dustin Johnson win the Sentry Tournament of Champions by 8 strokes (-24). This was a great effort helped along with a final round 65 (-8) and this monster 430+ yard drive on the 12th:
Jon Rahm (-16) and Brian Harman (-15) rounded out the top three. With Hideki Matsuyama, and my picks Pat Perez and Rickie Fowler finishing T4 on -14. I’m just quietly, very happy that a couple of my picks from my first DRAFT golf blog post managed to come in the top 5 – unfortunately, in our internal golf draft, I couldn’t compete with the team that managed to pick up both DJ and Rahmbo.
This week the PGA Tour remains in Hawaii, but this time at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu, which will mean another weekend of evening/late-night golf viewing for those of us on the East Coast.
We’re back with a full field of 139 golfers although a few notable names are missing, including DJ, Hideki, Jon Rahm and Rickie Fowler.
Waialae is a standard par 72 course but offers the potential for some low scores, as was demonstrated last year when it was torn apart by Justin Thomas with a record low aggregate score of 253, including a first round 59.
Hard to say whether this tournament will offer more chances for lower ranked players than last week, given the considerably larger field but also that a few top players are missing this week. Keep an eye out this week for Pat Perez (USA), as he comes off the back of another top 5 placing and currently leads the FedEx Cup standings. I also think Patton Kizzire (USA) is worth watching, and good value at just 54.1 projected points on DRAFT.
Easty’s top picks:
Justin Thomas (USA): Really hard to go past Justin again this week, even after placing in the lower half of the field last weekend. He won this event last year – in fact, he smashed it by 7 strokes.
Brian Harman (USA): I said that last week would be a good test of Harman’s recent form and with an outright 3rd placing I think he’s a good pick this week.
Marc Leishman (Aus): I like Marc, not just as a fellow compatriot, but as a golfer this week. I’d probably still take Jordan Spieth first, but Marc would certainly be a good option. He played well last week apart from a hiccup on Saturday but reined things back in for Sunday.
Patton Kizzire (USA): With 3/6 top 10 finishes already this season. I’m a fan of this 6’5″ giant and think he should outscore his projected 55 points.
Scott Piercy (USA): Not as confident with this pick, but Piercy was runner-up at this event 3 years ago, and if you’re stuck for a fifth-round pick, he might be worth a look.Tags: golf
